John Andrew Shulze

John Andrew Shulze (19 July 1775-18 November 1852) was the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania from 16 December 1823 to 15 December 1829, succeeding Joseph Hiester and preceding George Wolf.

Biography[]

John Andrew Shulze was born in Tulpehocken Township, Pennsylvania in 1775, the grandson of Henry Muhlenberg and the nephew of Peter Muhlenberg and Frederick Muhlenberg; he was raised to speak in German-accented English. He was elected to the General Assembly in 1806 and served three terms, and he also served in low offices in Lebanon County from 1813 to 1821, in the State Senate from 1821 to 1823, and as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1823 to 1829. Shulze worked to establish free compulsory education in his state, and he also oversaw major canal and road-building projects in his state. He went on to serve as a delegate to the Whig National Convention in 1839, and he served as President of Pennsylvania's Electoral College in 1840 before dying in Lancaster in 1852.
