John Alden Dix (25 December 1860-9 April 1928) was the Democratic Governor of New York from 1 January 1911 to 31 December 1912, succeeding Horace White and preceding William Sulzer.
Biography[]
John Alden Dix was born in Glens Falls, Warren County, New York in 1860, the second cousin of Daniel H. Wells. He worked in the lumber and paper making industries, and he served as a delegate to the 1904 Democratic National Convention and unsuccessfully ran for Lieutenant Governor in 1908. However, he was elected in 1910, and he implemented new fire safety measures in response to the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, created the state Conservation Committee, authorized direct primary elections, and limited work weeks to 54 hours. Dix served as a delegate to the 1912 Democratic National Convention, but he lost re-election that same year and retired to Santa Barbara, California. He died in New York City in 1928.
