John A. Notte Jr.

John Anthony Notte Jr. (3 May 1909-7 March 1983) was the Democratic Governor of Rhode Island from 3 January 1961 to 1 January 1963, succeeding Christopher Del Sesto and preceding John Chafee.

Biography[]

John Anthony Notte Jr. was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1909, and he practiced law and served as town solicitor of North Providence in 1937. He served as a lieutenant in the US Navy during World War II, after which he served as a staffer to US Senator Theodore F. Green from 1948 to 1956 and as Lieutenant Governor from 1959 to 1961. Notte himself served as Governor from 1961 to 1963, but his support for a state income tax cost him the support of the state's labor unions and re-election in 1962. He died in 1983.
