John Addison Gurley

John Addison Gurley (9 December 1813 – 19 August 1863) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-OH 2) from 4 March 1859 to 3 March 1863, succeeding William S. Groesbeck and preceding Alexander Long.

Biography[]

John Addison Gurley was born in East Hartford, Connecticut in 1813, and he was a Unitarian minister in Methuen, Massachusetts from 1835 to 1838 before moving west to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1838. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1859 to 1863 as a Republican, and he was appointed Governor of the Arizona Territory in 1863, only to suddenly die of appendicitis before he could assume office.
