Johann Siegmund von Riesch

Johann Siegmund von Riesch (2 August 1750-2 November 1821) was a general of the Austrian Empire during the War of the Bavarian Succession, Second Russo-Turkish War, French Revolutionary Wars, and Napoleonic Wars.

Biography[]

Johann Siegmund von Riesch was born in Vienna, Austria in 1750 to Saxon nobility. Originally serving as a soldier in the army of Saxony, in 1773 he joined the Austrian Empire's army and fought in the War of the Bavarian Succession. Becoming a cavalry officer, he fought Prussia, the Ottoman Empire, the Republic of France, and the French Empire during his career, winning both battles of Stockach during the French Revolutionary Wars but losing the 1800 Battle of Hohenlinden.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Riesch was met with more failures, being defeated by Marshal Michel Ney at the 1805 Battle of Elchingen and surrendering at the Battle of Ulm. He eventually retired in 1810.
