Joe Vandeleur

John Ormsby Evelyn "Joe" Vandeleur (14 November 1903 – 4 August 1988) was a Brigadier of the British Army who commanded 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards during World War II.

Biography[]

John Ormsby Evelyn Vandeleur was born in Nowshera, British Raj (now in Pakistan) on 14 November 1903 to a family of Anglo-Irish landlords from Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland. He was commissioned into the Irish Guards in 1924, and he commanded its 3rd Battalion during the British XXX Corps' breakout in Operation Market Garden in 1944 during World War II. His second cousin Giles Vandeleur commanded an armored battalion in the same battle. Vandeleur He retired from the army in 1951 after the war's end, and he lived in a manor house in Pinkneys Green, Maidenhead, Berkshire until his death in 1988 at the age of 85.
