Joaquim Nabuco

Joaquim Nabuco (19 August 1849-17 January 1910) was a Brazilian statesman who led the Liberal Party of Brazil during the last years of the Empire of Brazil.

Biography[]

Joaquim Nabuco was born in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil in 1849, the son of a wealthy conservative landowner who became a liberal and abolitionist during the 1860s. The younger Nabuco also became involved in the crusade against slavery as a young man, and he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1878 and led the movement which ultimately secured the abolition of slavery in 1888. Nabuco retired from politics after the overthrow of the Empire of Brazil, but he went on to serve as Brazil's first ambassador to the United States from 1905 to 1910. He died in Washington DC in 1910 at the age of 60.
