Joan, Lady of Wales (1189-2 February 1237) was the daughter of King John of England and the wife of King Llywelyn the Great of Gwynedd.
Biography[]
Joan was born in 1189, an illegitimate daughter of King John of England and his mistress Clemence. Joan spent part of her childhood in France and married the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great in 1203 as a part of an alliance between England and Gwynedd. One of their children was Dafydd ap Llywelyn, a future Prince of Wales. In 1226, she was legitimized by Pope Honorius III, but she did not have a claim to the throne. In 1230, the imprisoned English noble William de Braose was found with Joan in Llywelyn's bedchamber, leading to William's execution and a year-long house arrest for Joan. She died in Abergwyngregyn in 1237.
