Jimmy Vitales was born in New York City to a family of black Puerto Rican descent, and he became the proprietor of Cafe Vitales on Dock Street and Prospect Street in Brooklyn. The Barzini crime family muscled in on his business, with Johnny Mussolini opening a racket in the basement. In December 1945, Corleone crime family associate Aldo Trapani took over the business for the Corleones.
