Jim Bruce

Jim Bruce (died 1875) was an American deputy US Marshal who was active in Arkansas during the Wild West era. In 1875, he assembled a posse to arrest the outlaw Bob Dozier in the Indian Territory, but Dozier insisted that they were trespassing on Indian territory and were out of their jurisdiction. When Dozier dared Bruce to shoot him, Bruce and his posse intended to attack the cabin, only for Bruce's gang to ambush and kill all of the posse members. Dozier then shot Bruce in the foot and the leg before comparing him to an insect trespassing in his house, telling him that a person always killed the insect and sent it to the other insects to warn them to keep away. Bruce's severed head was sent back to Fort Smith as a warning to Judge Isaac Charles Parker, who promptly sent Bass Reeves after Dozier.
