Jesse Franklin (24 March 1760 – 31 August 1823) was a member of the US House of Representatives from North Carolina's 3rd district from 4 March 1795 to 3 March 1797 (succeeding Joseph Winston and preceding Robert Williams), a US Senator from 4 March 1799 to 4 March 1805 (succeeding Alexander Martin and preceding James Turner) and from 4 March 1807 to 4 March 1813 (interrupting David Stone's terms), and Governor of North Carolina from 7 December 1820 to 7 December 1821 (succeeding John Branch and preceding Gabriel Holmes). He was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party.
Biography[]
Jesse Franklin was born in Orange County, Virginia in 1760, and he moved to North Carolina with his father in 1774. He served as a Major in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and he fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse before taking part in partisan warfare against American loyalists. Franklin served in the North Carolina legislature from 1793 to 1794 and from 1797 to 1798, and he served in the US House of Representatives from 1795 to 1797, in the US Senate from 1799 to 1805 and from 1807 to 1813, and as Governor from 1820 to 1821, serving as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. He died in 1823.
