Jerzy Wołodyjowski

Jerzy Wołodyjowski (1620-26 August 1672) was a Polish nobleman and colonel during "The Deluge" of the mid-17th century.

Biography[]

Jerzy Wołodyjowski was born in Makow, Podolia, Poland-Lithuania in 1620, and he came from a family of lesser nobility. He was close friends with Mikolaj Skrzetuski during their youths, and Wołodyjowski became renowned as a talented swordsman. He joined Skrzetuski's retinue during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, aiding in his rescue of Helena Kurcewiczowna from Ivan Bohun and capturing Bohun at the Siege of Zbarazh in 1649. He went on to serve as a cavalryman and colonel under King Jan Sobieski, and he commanded the fortress of Kamenets Podolski. In 1672, he was killed by Ottoman cannon fire during a Turkish siege of his fortress.
