The Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) is the police department serving Jersey City, New Jersey. On 4 May 1829, the first law enforcement agency in Jersey City was created when watchmen were appointed, and the Jersey City Police District was formed on 3 March 1868. On 5 August 1873, the mounted police was formed by the JCPD, and they came to have police cars in 1928. In 1957, the Jersey City Police Academy was established with the goal of training new officers. The JCPD was historically composed of Irish and Italian policemen, but efforts were made to recruit a more diverse police force during the 2000s.
