Jerome Van Crowninsfield Smith (20 July 1800-21 August 1879) was the Know Nothing Mayor of Boston from 1854 to 1855, succeeding Benjamin Seaver and preceding Alexander H. Rice.
Biography[]
Jerome Van Crowninsfield Smith was born in Conway, New Hampshire in 1800. He graduated from Brown University in 1818 and served as an anatomy lecturer in Pittsfield, Massachusetts before editing the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal from 1828 to 1856. He served as quarantine physician for the port of Boston from 1826 to 1848 and served as Mayor from 1854 to 1855. He moved to New York City in 1863 and served in the Union Army during the American Civil War before dying in 1879.
