The Jebusites were a tribe of Canaanites who inhabited Jerusalem prior to its conquest by Joshua in 1000 BC. The Jebusites were descended from Canaan, the grandson of Noah, and they dwelled in the mountains besides Jerusalem. Adonizedek, the leader of the Jebusites, allied with neighboring cities against Joshua, but he was soundly defeated and killed. The Israelites turned Jerusalem into their capital, and Solomon turned the Jebusites into serfs. The Jebusites were later assimilated into the Israelites, and many Palestinians claim to be descended from the Jebusites.
