Jebe "the Mauler" Noyon (1196-1225), born Zurgadai, was a general of the Mongol Empire.
Biography[]
Zurgadai was originally one of the opponents of Genghis Khan in his rise to power (while he was still Temujin), fighting for the Besud tribe of Hazaras. Zurgadai injured Khan with an arrow to the neck in the 1201 Battle of the Thirteen Sides, but when the Besud were defeated, Jebe confessed to shooting the arrow. Genghis pardoned him and praised him, giving him the name "Jebe", meaning "arrow".
Jebe fought against the Kara-Khitans, and when Genghis feared that he would rebel due to greater ambitions, Jebe gave Genghis 100 white horses as a present that proved his loyalty. Jebe continued to fight for Khan in the invasion of Russia, defeating the Russians and Cumans at the Battle of Kalka River in 1225, but he died on the return journey.
