John Ellis Bush was born in Midland, Texas in 1953, the son of George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush, and the brother of George W. Bush. He grew up in Houston, and he moved to Florida in 1980 and became a real estate developer. From 1986 to 1988, he served as Florida's Secretary of Commerce, and he joined his father's successful presidential campaign. In 1994, he made his first run for office, narrowly losing the gubernatorial election. He pushed an ambitious Everglades conservation plan, supported caps for medical malpractice litigation, launched a Medicaid privatization pilot program, issued school vouchers, and promoted school choice. He left office in 2007, and he sought the Republican Party's nomination for the presidency in 2015. However, he suspended his campaign on 20 February 2016, endorsing Ted Cruz and opposing Donald Trump.
