Jean du Bellay

Jean du Bellay (1492-16 February 1560) was a French diplomat and cardinal.

Biography[]

Jean du Bellay was born in Souday, France in 1492, and he was educated in Paris and Angers. In 1524, King Francis I of France appointed him Bishop of Bayonne, and Pope Clement VII approved of this appointment. From 1527 to 1534, he served as ambassador to England (during which Anne Boleyn gifted him a dog named "Wolsey"), and he served as Bishop of Paris from 1534 to 1551. In 1535, Pope Paul III appointed Du Bellay as a cardinal, and he became Dean of the College of Cardinals in 1555. His influence at court waned during King Henry II of France's reign, so he focused primarily on ecclesiastical affairs, and he died in Rome in 1560.
