Jean-Mathieu-Philibert Sérurier (8 December 1742-21 December 1819) was a Marechal of France who served under Napoleon Bonaparte in the Italian Campaign of 1796-97 and defended Italy.
Biography[]
Sérurier was born to a middle class French family, and he served with distinction in the militia in the Seven Years' War in Europe. At the beginning of the French Revolution he was a major and later rose to the rank of Colonel under the revolutionary government. In 1795 he joined Francois-Christophe Kellerman in the Army of Italy in the Alps. He served well under Napoleon Bonaparte in the Italian Campaign of 1796-97, taking Cuneo in Late April 1796 from the Kingdom of Piedmont. Sérurier would go on to participate in Napoleon's coup of 1799, but he assisted in his downfall in 1814 and voted for Michel Ney's execution a year later.
