Biography[]
Jean-Noel Destrehan was born in New Orleans, French Louisiana in 1754, the son of the royal treasurer of Louisiana, and the brother-in-law of New Orleans' first mayor, Etienne de Bore. He was educated in France, and he bought a plantation in 1792. After the Louisiana Purchase, he served as speaker of the territorial house of representatives from 1804 to 1806 before serving on Thomas Jefferson's Orleans Territorial Council. In 1811, he became president of the Orleans legislative council, and, that same year, some of his slaves took part in a massive slave uprising in the German Coast region. He placed third in the first Louisiana gubernatorial election, and he was instead selected to serve in the US Senate; however, he resigned after a month. He served in the State Senate from 1812 to 1817, and he placed fourth in the 1820 gubernatorial election. He died at his plantation in 1823.
