
Jean-Andre van der Mersch (10 February 1734-14 September 1792) was a general of the United Belgian States during the Brabant Revolution.
Biography[]
Jean-Andre van der Mersch was born in Menen, Flanders, Austrian Netherlands on 10 February 1734, and he served as an officer in the French Royal Army at the Battle of Rossbach and the Battle of Hochkirch during the Seven Years' War. He then joined the Austrian Reichsarmee during in 1778, and he retired with the rank of colonel. In 1789, Van der Mersch accepted the invitation of Jan Frans Vonck to become the commander of the patriot army that fought in the Brabant Revolution against Austria, defeating an Austrian army at Turnhout on 27 October 1789. Van der Mersch died on 14 September 1792.
