Jasper Longfield

Jasper Longfield was an African-American boxer who lived in New York City during the 1860s. The brother of Bessie Longfield, who murdered two Irishmen, he found refuge with Doctor Matthew Freeman during the ensuing period of heightened racial tensions and was recruited as a boxer by Freeman's uncle Marcus Freeman. Longfield was made to take the dive during a fight with Jake McGinnis, but the fight's organizer Robert Morehouse feared that Longfield's sever beating of McGinnis would put him at risk, and Morehouse bought Longfield a ship ticket to Halifax and advised him to leave the country before he could be lynched.
