Jason Rezaian

Jason Rezaian (born 15 March 1976) is an American journalist who was the bureau chief of The Washington Post in Tehran, Iran. On 22 July 2014 he was arrested and held at the notorious Evin Prison, which housed political prisoners and intellectuals. On 20 April 2015 he was indicted for espionage and anti-establishment propaganda.

Jason Rezaian was born on 15 March 1976 in Marin County, California to a father from Iran and a mother from Chicago. He became a journalist with the San Francisco Chronicle and the Monocle before working for The Washington Post, going to Iran in 2008. In 2012, he became the Post's Tehran correspondent, but on 22 July 2014 he was arrested by the government along with his wife. On 6 October his wife was released on bail, but Jason was moved to Evin Prison, known to be the detainment center for political prisoners and intellectuals. On 20 April 2015 it was announced that he was being tried for espionage, propaganda against the establishment, collaborating with hostile governments, and other charges. On 22 November 2015 he was sentenced to an undetermined time in prison, but on 16 January 2016 he was released in a prisoner exchange between Iran and the United States.
