Jardin du Luxembourg

The Jardin du Luxembourg is a public garden in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, France, next to the Luxembourg Palace. The garden was created in 1612 to 1630, with Queen Marie de Medici (wife of King Henry IV of France) designing the Jardin du Luxembourg in imitation of the Pitti Palace in her native Florence. The garden was neglected by later monarchs, and, in 1780, the Count of Provence (the future Louis XVIII of France) sold the eastern part of the garden for real estate. After the French Revolution, however, the French Republic expanded the Jardin du Luxembourg by an additional 40 hectares through the confiscation of lands belonging to the Catholic Church.
