The Janata Party (JP) was a big tent political party in India that was active from 1977 to 2013. The party was founded by an alliance of political parties opposed by the state of emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the ruling Indian National Congress party; many former INC members joined the new Janata Party to support a return to democracy. The party won a sweeping victory in the Indian parliament, and he party reversed several Emergency-era decrees, but infighting between the multi-tendency parties within the Janata Party led to it becoming a weakened party. In 1980, the INC returned to power, and the Janata Party split into factions and dissolved. In 2013, the party merged into the Bharatiya Janata Party, its largest successor.
