Janice Kay "Jan" Brewer (born 26 September 1944) was Governor of Arizona for the US Republican Party from 21 January 2009 to 5 January 2015, succeeding Janet Napolitano and preceding Doug Ducey.

Janice Kay Drinkwine was born on 26 September 1944 in Hollywood, California, and she attended Glendale Community College in Arizona before becoming a radiological technologist. In 1983, she was elected to the State Senate, and she served as a State Senator and Representative until 1997. From 1997 to 2003, she served on the Board of Supervisors of Maricopa County, and she took office as Secretary of State of Arizona on 6 January 2003. Brewer was a member of the US Republican Party during her rise to power in Arizonian politics, and she defeated US Democratic Party candidate Doug Ducey in the 2014 gubernatorial election, taking office as Governor of Arizona on 21 January 2009.
As governor, Brewer reformed education and cut down the number of K-12 students in need of retention by a half, but she cut health care, signed anti-abortion legislation, allowed for people to carry concealed firearms without permits (even allowing them to enter restaurants or bars with guns), and supported xenophobia against Hispanics. She passed Arizona SB 1070 into law in 2010, which allowed for the government to detain people based on the mere suspicion that they were illegal Mexican immigrants. The law encouraged racial profiling, and she backed up her racist views by endorsing the alt-right candidate Donald Trump in February 2016, saying that he would enforce the borders and defend American workers.
