James Whitfield (3 November 1770 – 19 October 1834) was Archbishop of Baltimore from 29 January 1828 to 19 October 1834, succeeding Ambrose Marechal and preceding Samuel Eccleston.
Biography[]
James Whitfield was born in Liverpool, Merseyside, England in 1770, and he studied theology in Lyons, France while his family was being detained by France while on a return trip from Italy during the Napoelonic Wars. In 1809, he was ordained as a Catholic priest, and he headed to Maryland in the United States in September 1817. In 1828, he succeeded Ambrose Marechal as Archbishop of Baltimore, and he worked for the welfare of the African-American community. He died in 1834.
