
James Whitfield (15 December 1791-25 June 1875) was the Democratic Governor of Mississippi from 24 November 1851 to 10 January 1852, succeeding John Isaac Guion and preceding Henry S. Foote.
Biography[]
James Whitfield was born in Elbert County, Georgia in 1791, and he served in both houses of the Mississippi state legislature before serving as Governor from 1851 to 1852 so that Governor-elect Henry S. Foote could complete his service in the US Senate before assuming office. Whitfield oversaw the construction of the state's largest psychiatric facility and hospital during his tenure.
