
James Turner (20 December 1766 – 15 January 1824) was Governor of North Carolina from 6 December 1802 to 10 December 1805, succeeding Benjamin Williams and preceding Nathaniel Alexander, and a US Senator from 4 March 1805 to 21 November 1816, succeeding Jesse Franklin and preceding Montfort Stokes. He was a Democratic-Republican.
Biography[]
James Turner was born in Southampton County, Virginia in 1766, and his family moved to North Carolina in 1770. He was raised in a family of farmers, and he served in the militia under Nathanael Greene during the American Revolutionary War. A Democratic-Republican, Turner served as Governor of North Carolina from 1802 to 1805 and as a US Senator from 1805 to 1816. He died in 1824.
