James Stoddard Boynton (7 May 1833 – 22 December 1902) was Governor of Georgia from 4 March to 10 May 1883, succeeding Alexander Stephens and preceding Henry Dickerson McDaniel.

James Stoddard Boynton was born in Henry County, Georgia on 7 May 1833, and he passed the bar and became a lawyer in 1852. Stephens served as a private in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, and he was wounded at the battle of Atlanta in 1864; he ended the war with the rank of Colonel. Boynton would enter the US Democratic Party during the Reconstruction era, and he served as acting Governor of Georgia after the death of Alexander Stephens, as he was President of the Georgia Senate. He served for two months and six days before Henry Dickerson McDaniel assumed office, and he became Mayor of Griffin, Georgia and a Spalding County judge. He died in 1902.
