James McBride

James McBride (9 February 1802 – 18 December 1875) was an Oregon Republican state legislator and the United States ambassador to Hawaii from 1863 to 1866.

Biography[]

James McBride was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1802, and he later moved to Springfield, Missouri, where he married and had fourteen children. In 1846, the family migrated to Lafayette, Oregon, where he practiced medicine, farmed, and preached. He became a Whig territorial legislator and Oregon's first superintendent of schools, co-founded the state GOP, and went on to serve as ambassador to Hawaii from 1863 to 1866. His sons George W. McBride and John R. McBride later served in the US Congress, and he died in 1875.
