
James Mercer Garnett (8 June 1770 – 23 April 1843) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-VA 11) from 4 March 1805 to 3 March 1809, succeeding Anthony New and preceding John Roane.
Biography[]
James Mercer Garnett was born in Loretto, Essex County, Virginia in 1770, and he served in the House of Delegates from 1800 to 1801 and in the US House of Representatives from 1805 to 1809. He was part of a grand jury that indicted Vice President Aaron Burr for treason in 1807, and he returned to planting after leaving the US Congress, later attending the State Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830.
