James Logan (20 October 1674 – 31 October 1751) was Mayor of Philadelphia from 1722 to 1723, succeeding William Fishbourn and preceding Clement Plumsted.
Biography[]
James Logan was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland in 1674, and his father was originally an Anglican clergyman before becoming a Quaker. In 1693, he became a schoolmaster in Bristol, England, and, in 1699, he came to Pennsylvania to serve as William Penn's secretary. After serving in various positions in Penn's government, he was elected Mayor of Philadelphia in 1722, serving for a year. He allowed for Irish Catholic immigrants to participate in the city's first public mass, and he went on to serve as the colony's chief justice from 1731 to 1739. He died in Stenton in 1751.
