James Iredell Jr. (2 November 1788 – 13 April 1853) was Governor of North Carolina from 8 December 1827 to 12 December 1828, succeeding Hutchins Gordon Burton and preceding John Owen, and a US Senator from 15 December 1828 to 4 March 1831, succeeding Nathaniel Macon and preceding Willie Person Mangum.
Biography[]
James Iredell Jr. was born in Chowan County, North Carolina in 1788, the son of US Supreme Court justice James Iredell. He commanded a company of volunteers during the War of 1812, served in the state House of Commons, served in the State House of Representatives, and served on the Superior Court. Iredell served as Governor from 1827 to 1828, pushing for infrastructure and education, and the state legislature appointed him to finish Nathaniel Macon's US Senate term in December 1828; Iredell served out the rest of the term until its end in 1831. He died in Edenton in 1853.
