James Hartness

James Hartness (3 September 1861-2 February 1934) was the Republican Governor of Vermont from 6 January 1921 to 4 January 1923, succeeding Percival W. Clement and preceding Redfield Proctor Jr..

Biography[]

James Hartness was born in Schenectady, New York in 1861, and he was raised in Cleveland, Ohio and in Winsted, Connecticut before moving to Springfield, Vermont and becoming a machine company superintendent and one of Vermont's first aviators. He served as Governor from 1921 to 1923, championing the transportation system and manufacturing. He died in 1934.
