James Hardenbrook (1716-1799) was a Dutch-American notary and main banker from Sleepy Hollow, New York.
Biography[]
James Hardenbrook was born in Sleepy Hollow in 1716. He became a notary in 1736, and worked for the Van Garret family. He was one of the most notorious neighbours of the village alongside with Peter Van Garret, Baltus Van Tassel, Thomas Lancaster, Samuel Philipse and Reverend Steenwick. In 1799, he was one of the main victims of the Headless Horseman, he hanged himself due to not being killed by this "undead entity" just a day after being interrogated by Ichabod Crane.
