James Fenner (22 January 1771 – 17 April 1846) was a US Senator from Rhode Island from 4 March 1805 to September 1807, succeeding Christopher Ellery and preceding Elisha Mathewson, and Governor of Rhode Island from 6 May 1807 to 1 May 1811 (succeeding Isaac Wilbour and preceding William Jones), from 5 May 1824 to 4 May 1831 (succeeding William C. Gibbs and preceding Lemuel H. Arnold), and from 2 May 1843 to 6 May 1845 (succeeding Samuel Ward King and preceding Charles Jackson). He was a Democratic-Republican.
Biography[]
James Fenner was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1771, the son of future governor Arthur Fenner. Entering into politics as a Democratic-Republican, Fenner served in the US Senate from 1805 to 1807 and as Governor from 1807 to 1811, from 1824 to 1831, and from 1843 to 1845. During his last term, he was a member of the conservative "Law and Order Party", a coalition of Whigs and conservative Democrats. He died in 1846.
