James DeWolf (18 March 1764 – 21 December 1837) was a US Senator from Rhode Island (DR) from 4 March 1821 to 31 October 1825, succeeding William Hunter and preceding Asher Robbins.
Biography[]
James DeWolf was born in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1764, and he was captured twice by the British while serving as an American privateer during the American Revolutionary War. In 1791, he was indicted for murdering a slave said to have smallpox, whom he said threatened the lives of all of the other slaves and the crew because of the disease. In 1798, he was elected to the state legislature, in which he would serve for 25 years, and he also served in the US Senate from 1821 until his resignation in 1825. He died in 1837.
