James C

James Coughlin Shannon (21 July 1896-6 March 1980) was the Republican Governor of Connecticut from 7 March 1948 to 5 January 1949, succeeding James L. McConaughy and preceding Chester B. Bowles.

Biography[]

James Coughlin Shannon was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1896, and he became Bridgeport's prosecuting attorney in 1923, serving until 1932. He also served on the bench of the Bridgeport City and Juvenile Courts from 1931 to 1935, as attorney for the Connecticut Federation of Labor from 1939 to 1948, as Lieutenant Governor from 1947 to 1948, and as Governor from 1948 to 1949 following James L. McConaughy's death. He died in Fairfield in 1980.
