James Chamberlain Jones (20 April 1809 – 29 October 1859) was Governor of Tennessee (W) from 15 October 1841 to 14 October 1845 (succeeding James K. Polk and preceding Aaron V. Brown) and a US Senator from 4 March 1851 to 3 March 1857 (succeeding Hopkins L. Turney and preceding Andrew Johnson).
Biography[]
James Chamberlain Jones was born in Davidson County, Tennessee, and he purchased a farm near Lebanon in 1829. He went on to serve in the state legislature and as a Whig presidential elector, and he then served as Governor from 1841 to 1845 and as a US Senator from 1851 to 1857. During his governorship, he built one of the strongest Whig movements in the American South. In the US Senate, he railed against the northern Conscience Whigs for refusing to support the Kansas-Nebraska Act. After the collapse of the Whig Party, he supported Democratic presidential nominees James Buchanan in 1856 and Stephen A. Douglas in 1860. He died in 1859.
