
James Butler, 5th Earl of Ormond (24 November 1420-1 May 1461) was a Lancastrian general during the Wars of the Roses.
Biography[]
James Butler was the son of James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond, and he was the brother-in-law of John Talbot, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury. In 1449, King Henry VI of England made him Earl of Wiltshire, and he became Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1451. The next year, he succeeded his father as Earl of Ormond and served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for the next ten years. In 1454, he became Lord High Treasurer of England. During the Wars of the Roses, he fought on the Lancastrian side, and he was captured at the Battle of Towton in 1461. He was beheaded at Newcastle by the Yorkists on 1 May 1461.
