
James Butler, 1st Earl of Ormond (1305-6 January 1338) was Earl of Ormond from 1328 to 1337, preceding James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond.
Biography[]
James Butler was the son of Edmund Butler, Earl of Carrick, and he inherited the title of Chief Butler of Ireland from his father in 1321. In 1328, King Edward III of England created the title "Earl of Ormond" for James, and he gave his castle and estate of Carrick to the Friary of Carrick-Begg. He died in 1338.
