James Bernard Longley (22 April 1924-16 August 1980) was the Democratic Governor of Maine from 2 January 1975 to 3 January 1979, succeeding Kenneth M. Curtis and preceding Joseph E. Brennan.
Biography[]
James Bernard Longley was born in Lewiston, Maine in 1924, and he headed the Maine Management and Cost Survey Commission under Governor Kenneth M. Curtis before running for Governor in 1974 as an independent, as he had missed the Democratic Party's filing deadline. He used his insurance business catchphrase "Think About It" to win the election in an upset, and he was controversial for his off-the-cuff comments such as calling the state legislators "pimps" and attempting to end Indian land claims in his state. He died in 1980.
