
Jamal al-Gashey (1953-) was a member of the Black September Organization and one of the perpetrators of the 1972 Munich Massacre. Along with Adnan al-Gashey and Mohammed Safady, he survived the massacre and was freed after the hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 615.
Biography[]
Jamal al-Gashey was born in 1953 in the Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon, and he joined the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1967 to fight against Israel, which he blamed for his family's situation. In 1972, he was recruited for "special training" with the Black September Organization and was selected as one of the kidnappers in the Munich Massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. al-Gashey was shot in the wrist while attempting to aid another hijacker, and alongside Mohammed Safady and Adnan al-Gashey, he survived the attack. He was captured by the West German police, but he was released after the hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 615, and he lived in North Africa afterwards. He was the only attacker known to be alive as of 2012, with the other two allegedly being killed years before during Operation Wrath of God.
