Jalisco New Generation Cartel

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was a Mexican drug cartel that was active in Jalisco, Mexico from 2009. The cartel was formed in the aftermath of the death of the Sinaloa Cartel drug lord Ignacio Coronel Villarreal in 2010, and Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes became the head of the new cartel. The cartel allied with the Tijuana Cartel, and it fought for control of the cities of Guadalajara and Jalisco and the states of Michoacan and Veracruz against the Knights Templar Cartel and Los Zetas. Joaquin Guzman Loera, boss of the Sinaloa Cartel, used the CJNG as his armed wing for his struggle against Los Zetas, and the group posed as a righteous and nationalistic group, comparing themselves to the Colombian narco-paramilitary gangs. The CJNG's rise to power was rapid, and, by 2019, it was one of the most powerful gangs in Mexico due to its territorial presence, its income from cocaine and synthetic drug trafficking, its control of port infrastructure, and its ability to launder money. In northern Mexico, where the Sinaloa Cartel remained the strongest cartel, the CJNG lacked any real influence, but it took part in a series of violent clashes for control of border crossings. In Tijuana, Baja California, the CJNG allied itself with the weakened Tijuana Cartel against Sinaloa, but Sinaloa remained the dominant gang in the city. In Ciudad Juarez, the CJNG was allied with the New Juarez Cartel, but it had to compete with the Los Salazar cell of the Sinaloa Cartel, the La Linea faction of the Juarez Cartel, and numerous smaller street gangs which controlled much of the microtrafficking. In 2020, the CJNG - in alliance with the Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel - began to expand into Tamaulipas at the expense of the Northeast Cartel and the New Blood Zetas. In the Tierra Caliente (Michoacan, Guerrero, and Mexico City), the CJNG was the largest and most well-funded group, and they were rivals with the Cartel del Abuelo (led by Juan Jose Farias Alvarez) and Los Viagras. In Mexico City, the CJNG was present in the capital's northern poorer neighborhoods, but the center was controlled by La Union Tepito. In Morelos, the CJNG fought for control of the human trafficking, kidnapping, microtrafficking, and drug trafficking industries, which were contested by Los Rojos, splinter groups from La Familia Michoacana, and the Mexico City gangs. In southeastern Mexico, the CJNG made direct attempts to dominate the area, but continued to face the Sinaloa Cartel, the remnants of Los Zetas, and Los Pelones. The CJNG was strongest in Jalisco (around Guadalajara), Puerto Vallarta, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Nayarit, Colima, and Michoacan. From 2018, the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel was the CJNG's most notable rival, despite being confined to central Mexico. The gang's battles against the Old School Zetas resulted in several massacres, and the gang soon took control of a large part of Veracruz.
