Jaish al-Sham was a moderate Syrian Opposition group formed on 9 October 2015 during the Syrian Civil War.
History[]
Jaish al-Sham was formed as a moderate group by a former commander of the Ahrar ash-Sham rebel organization. The group had an initial strength of 1,000 fighters, a decent size for a new rebel organization in the Syrian Civil War. The organization's leaders went back and forth between Turkey and Syria, and the organization was said to have had bases in Aleppo Governorate, Idlib Governorate, Hama Governorate, and Lattakia Governorate; it was the first major splinter group of Ahrar ash-Sham. Its leaders were Sunni Islamists, hoping to unite several smaller Syrian rebel groups under its banner.
