Jacob Petrovich Kulnev

Jacob Petrovich Kulnev (1763-20 July 1812) was a general of the Russian Empire. Kulnev fought in the Napoleonic Wars and was killed in battle in the Battle of Klyastitsy in 1812 during the Patriotic War.

Biography[]

Jacob Petrovich Kulnev gained his first experience in the Russian Army during the Second Russo-Turkish War in 1787-1791 at the capture of Bendery fortress from the Ottoman Empire. After serving under Alexander Suvorov in the quelling of the Kosciuszko Uprising of 1794, he was made a Major in the hussars. In 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars battle of Friedland, he was made a Colonel. Kulnev proceeded to fight in the Finnish War and in 1810 he defeated the Ottomans at the Battle of Shumla and Batin

In 1812, he commanded the Grodno Hussars under Peter Wittgenstein in the Patriotic War of the Napoleonic Wars. On 19 July 1812 Kulnev captured Marshal Nicolas Oudinot's transport and 900 French troops, but was mortally wounded by a cannonball during the Battle of Klyastitsy. He was the first Russian general killed in the war.
