Jacob P. Chamberlain

Jacob Payson Chamberlain (1 August 1802 – 5 October 1878) was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-NY 26) from 4 March 1861 to 3 March 1863, succeeding Emory B. Pottle and preceding Giles W. Hotchkiss.

Biography[]

Jacob Payson Chamberlain was born in Dudley, Massachusetts in 1802, and his family moved to western New York in 1807. Chamberlain worked as a school teacher, farmer, and town clerk in Varick before starting a business career in Seneca Falls. Originally a Bucktail Democrat (a pro-Tammany Hall liberal), he later became a Whig and a Republican, and he attended the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and signed the Declaration of Sentiments in support of women's rights. He went on to serve in the State Assembly in 1859 and in the US House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863, and he died in 1878.
