Jacob Brinkerhoff

Jacob Brinkerhoff (31 August 1810-19 July 1880) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-OH 11) from 4 March 1843 to 3 March 1847, succeeding Benjamin S. Cowen and preceding John K. Miller. Born in Niles, New York, he practiced law in Mansfield, Ohio before serving as Richland County prosecutor from 1839 to 1843 and in Congress. After defecting to the Free Soil Party, he drew up the Wilmot Proviso to prevent the spread of slavery into the Mexican Cession. He later served as Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1859 to 1871, and he died in 1880.
