
John Francis "Jack" Reed (12 November 1949-) was a US Senator from Rhode Island (D) from 3 January 1997 (succeeding Claiborne Pell), having previously served as a member of the US House of Representatives (D-RI 2) from 3 January 1991 to 3 January 1997 (succeeding Claudine Schneider and preceding Robert Weygand).
Biography[]
John Francis Reed was born in Cranston, Rhode Island on 12 November 1949, and he graduated from West Point in 1971 and served as a company commander in the US 82nd Airborne Division from 1971 to 1979. He then went on to graduate from Harvard University, and he worked as a lawyer and US Army reserve major before being elected to the State Senate in 1984 as a Democratic Party member for the first of three terms. In 1990, he was elected to the US House of Representatives, and he focused on education and healthcare. In 1997, he was elected to the US Senate, and he supported generally liberal positions on social and economic issues.
